Youngster turned down the opportunity to swap shirts with LIonel Messi

Girona defender Pablo Maffeo turned down the opportunity to swap shirts with Lionel Messi because he wanted Marc-Andre Ter Stegen’s for a friend.

Manchester City loanee Maffeo was given the arduous task of man-marking Lionel Messi for Girona’s La Liga clash with Barcelona on Saturday.

Barcelona won 3-0 but Maffeo, 20, kept Messi quiet and said after the game: “A friend of mine wanted Ter Stegen’s shirt so I asked the goalkeeper.

“Messi is the best in the world, but friends come first.”
